Selectors allow a user to flip through the panels in a panel stack, or display different attribute, custom group, or consolidation elements or metrics in a Grid/Graph. The panel stack or Grid/Graph is the target of the selector. For an introduction to selectors, see Providing interactivity to users: Selectors.
The document must contain at least one panel stack or Grid/Graph, to use as the target of the selector. For steps, see Inserting a panel stack into a document or Adding Grid/Graphs to documents.
Open the document in Design or Editable Mode.
Expand the section where you want to add the selector by clicking the plus sign next to the section name.
Click the arrow next to the Selector
Control icon
and then choose the selector style from the drop-down
list. For examples of each selector style, see
Defining
a selector.
Click a location on your document in which to place the selector. The selector is added to the document.
Note: You cannot place a selector in the Detail section of a document.
You can resize the selector by clicking and dragging its handles.
To format the selector, right-click the selector and select Properties and Formatting. The Properties and Formatting dialog box opens.
From the left, choose Selector.
From the Action Type drop-down list, determine what the selector will be used to do. For example, will the selector be used to choose different attribute, custom group, or consolidation elements, or a panel within a panel stack? Choose from the following:
Select Element: When the document is displayed, the selector will display a list of the elements from the attribute chosen in the Source field. If you choose this option, select a Source from the drop-down list. The Source list contains all of the attributes in all of the datasets in the document.
Select Metric: When the document is displayed, the selector will display a list of the metrics available in the Grid/Graphs chosen as the Target.
Note: Metrics that are within text fields in the target are not listed. For example, a panel stack is selected as a Target and contains a metric in a text field. That metric is not displayed in the Select Metric list.
Select Panel: When the document is displayed, the selector will display a list of the panels available in the panel stack chosen as the Target.
Note: If the selector style is set to Checkboxes, Select Panel is unavailable, since you cannot display multiple panels simultaneously. Select a different style to display panels.
By default, the selector allows the user to display all the elements or metrics in the Target at one time. To disable this, clear the Show option for All check box.
Note: This option is not available if the Action Type is set to Select Panel, or the Style is set to Slider and the Allow multiple selections check box is selected.
To allow the user to choose multiple options in the selector, select the Allow multiple selections check box. Only some selector styles support multiple selections.
For Slider, Radio Buttons, Checkboxes, and Button Bar, the Orientation option is available. You can select whether to display the selector horizontally (on a single line from left to right) or vertically (in a single column).
From the list of available Targets on the right, select Grid/Graph(s) and/or panel stack(s) and click > to add them to the list of Selected Targets:
If the Action Type is Select Panel, you can only select a single panel stack. The panels in this panel stack are displayed in the selector.
If the Action Type is Select Element or Select Metric, you can select single or multiple Grid/Graphs, panel stacks, or any combination of Grid/Graphs and panel stacks. The target Grid/Graph displays the elements or metrics that the user chooses in the selector.
Click OK to return to the document.
